Scripture:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. (1 John 1:1-4)Background:
Book written by Apostle John. (The same author of Fourth Gospel account, 1-3 John, Revelation)Point 1: Jesus is the Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)Note: In all of Apostle John’s writing, he used the term “word of life”, “the word”, “the life” , “the eternal life”, as a person pointing to Jesus Christ, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Point 2: Jesus is the Life
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4)Note: What did Apostle John write about the “word that was with God”? He tells us in the first chapter of his gospel account that in him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4)
Point 3: Jesus is to be Proclaimed
He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, ( John 1:2, 3a)"But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you will also bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. (John 15:26-27)
"As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world... I do not ask for these only , but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me,"(John 17:18, 20-21)
Note: What is the joyful response of someone who has just received the greatest gift of all, namely, Jesus himself? By the power of the Holy Spirit, they witness and testify and proclaim.
Point 4: Jesus is to be Received
... and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:3b, 4)Note: As people who walk in the light, just as Jesus did, we have fellowship with him. The basis of this new way of living is the loving mercy of God towards undeserving sinners like you and me.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:6-7,9)
Conclusion:
In our multiple attempts to seek and find fulfillment, Jesus—the word and life—freely gives everlasting life for those who humbly repent of all their sins and have fellowship with him through his blood. Hope is found in no one else, only in Jesus.(see 1 John 1:6-7,9)
Application Questions:
If we are to trust in Jesus as our only hope, how can we have that access? (See John 1:12, 3:16)How do we grow into the confidence that we have a fellowship with the Father and the Son? (See Book of John)
