Be Still

There are times when everything seems falling apart and there is no glimpse of hope  around you. There will be time when you are facing great trials and you think you've done everything you can do but still fail. The Hebrew word "be still" means to cause to fall or to let go.
The whole chapter psalm 46 states many forms of power (the mountains, seas, nations) in comparison with the power of God. And we can see here that nothing can surpass his might. The earth melts when God speaks. Now, think of something that causes you to fear and compare. With this you will know how great our God is.

One character of a true believer and follower of Jesus Christ is stillness. Being still is one of our "secret weapon" in winning victories. What does it really mean to be still?

Frederick Brotherton Meyer, a pastor, said, "We must cultivate the habit of stillness in our lives if we would detect and know God.”

1. Be still means "Let Go"

"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" (Psalm 46:10)

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
(Psalm 37:8)

Letting go is also found in psalm 37's "refrain from anger". This chapter calls us to "trust in the Lord, delight yourself in the Lord, commit our way to the Lord, and be still in the Lord". Let go of everything that creates hate in your heart. Let go even if you fill like things are unfair and uncertain. Be still because our God will never forsake His people.

2. Be still means "Reverent Attention"

And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings. (Ezekiel 1:24-25)

Stillness is the character of reverent attention. When you are being stilled in all the noise and all the busyness, you will be able to put all your attention to God and hear His voice clearly.

3. Be still means "Stop To Listen"

Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night." And he said to him, "Speak." (1 Samuel 15:16)

Stillness allows us to see ourselves and our doings. It allows us to reflect on things to know whether we are still pleasing God or not anymore. Stillness urge us to stop sinning in order for us to hear God.

Then David said to Gad, "I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord , for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man."
(2 Samuel 24:14)

David was in great distress because he committed a sin in numbering the people.

And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, "It is enough; now stay your hand." And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
(2 Samuel 24:16)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
(Romans 8:1)

So whatever sin you have done, be still because the cross is where the judgement stayed. Sin no more!

4. Being still means "To Stand Firm And See"

And Moses said to the people, "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord , which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent." (Exodus 14:13-14)

There are times when everything seems falling apart and there is no glimpse of hope  around you. There will be time when you are facing great trials and you think you've done everything you can do but still fail. There will be time when the world is all up against you. Being still means to stand firm, put your full confidence and faith in Jesus, and witness Him win a victory for you.  The battle is not for you to overcome but for Jesus to win it for you. Be still!
