Naked And Afraid

Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes. (Romans 7:13)

Read: Genesis 3

(For our devotion today, due to time restrictions, I would encourage you to read your bibles from Genesis 1-3 for you to know the complete picture of what we will be talking about and you could follow thru.)

Have you watched an episode of the TV show Survivor? If so, have you planned to join? Or have you ever wanted to join? It is a reality TV Show wherein people are placed in the wild (particularly in an island) without electricity and technology. They have to hunt for their own food, make their own shelter, and survive for several weeks.

Personally, I don't want to join because I am afraid of the deep waters. Ironic, isn't it? 😊

If you have been reading your Bible, I believe this Genesis 3 will be very familiar to you. We would usually see this entitled "The Fall of Humanity" or simply, "The Fall". As I was pondering upon this a few days ago while I was starting another bible reading plan, I was just deeply reminded about the gravity of sin and, at the same time, amazed as to how God wanted us to overcome it.

In reading this chapter, it started by introducing us to the serpent, (Gen 3:1) "The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, 'Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?'"

Sin, as what the serpent represented is in this chapter, is real. If you heard someone telling you that you are not sinful, well tonight I would like to tell you to unfollow whomever that person may be and begin to read the real truth - the Word of God. The severity of this is so great that it made the very man whom God had made to be pushed away from its original place. Can you think of it? More so, beginning from this very chapter, sin gave birth. It made Cain kill his brother, and so on. It made the holy, unblemished, and sinless Son of God, Jesus Christ, bear all these for us to remember our original design from Genesis - to bear the image of God.

Everything that had been taking place before this very chapter is the right definition of 'perfect peace' - in a sense that all creation, including man (Adam and Eve), is just so reliant on what God had made and provided. In fact, the very verse before this in Genesis 2:25 says, "Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame." Why was there no shame? The answer is simple: "shame can only arise from a consciousness of sinful or irregular conduct" (Adam Clarke). Therefore one could only overcome sin if, and only if, there is total dependence in God!

To conclude our devotion, allow me to read what Paul, in Romans 7:9-13 (NLT) told us, "At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, and I died. So I discovered that the law’s commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead. Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me. But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good. But how can that be? Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes."

May God bless you and keep you!
