Selfless Commitment

Like in the Church, no one is more than the other. Although we have different functions, roles, and gifts, everyone is unique and has made their own devotion to the Lord. We are in one commitment with God, and it has to be selfless, by putting others first before us.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 23:16-17 NLT

Observations:

1. I can see how devoted those three are to David. They even risked their lives just to get the craving of David.
2. David was so touched that he could not drink the water but poured it out to the Lord. He thus acknowledges the sacredness of the devotion of these men and his own deep appreciation for their love.

Applications:

1. The Church needs mighty men who are attracted to the person of Christ and committed to the cause of Christ. (Read Philippians 2:3)
Do you know why they were attracted to David? Because during that time, David was God's Anointed King of Israel. In the same way, why do we need to be attracted to the Person of Christ? Because Jesus is the Messiah "The Anointed King" who selflessly sacrifice his life, die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sin.

2. As a leader, like David, may the words of praise to God be continually on our lips. Because God alone is worthy to be praised.

David became selfless because instead of drinking the water, he offered it to the Lord. For him, their deeds were honorable to God, and the deeds of three mighty men are equal with David in the eyes of God.

Like in the Church, no one is more than the other. Although we have different functions, roles, and gifts, everyone is unique and has made their own devotion to the Lord. We are in one commitment with God, and it has to be selfless, by putting others first before us.

When praise is directed toward others, especially God, stay out of the way. When honor is directed toward us, thank the person and then amplify that praise by giving all the glory to Jesus.
